Am I the only girl gamer on the planet that doesn't like RPG's, or is there another one out there?
My biggest thing with RPG's is I don't like reading games, I like playing them. Don't get me wrong, I do like a good story, but what turns me on to a game is the real gameplay. A good story is an excellent compliment to the game. I also like instant action. Turn based fighting is very unappealing to me. One other qualm I have with it is I don't usually like a game to be too complicated. I don't want to have to read the manual to be able to understand how to play the game. I just want to be able to install it and play it by ear. I rarely use the manual. And if I do, it's to look up something quickly. It's used as a reference rather than a guide.
Anyway, I don't see anything wrong with the genre, this is just my personal taste. It's one of those love/hate kind of things. I've heard people say the same thing about FPS. I personally highly enjoy them.
The weird part about all this is I like RTS games, and that's almost bordering on an RPG. For some reason I will occasionally buy an RPG because I want to like it, but I always end up dissapointed. Anyway, I'm rambling and it's late. Let me know what you think.

Re: Are there any girls who don't like RPG's?
Wed, June 22, 2005 - 12:26 PMthis is why I get uppity when "video Gamers" call themselves "GAMERS".
Up until this reletivly new trend, mostly on the internet, when someone said "I'm a Gamer" you knew what they meant. It meant they played RPGs and complex Board games.
Now someone might mean they like Mario Kart.
It DILLUTES the meaning of our subculture. It lessens our group identity. Video Gamers are closing in on our territory! -

Re: Are there any girls who don't like RPG's?
Wed, June 22, 2005 - 12:30 PMAnd again, I'll just quote what I said last time:
" Everyone has a different meaning for labels. My definition of "gamer" is what I am. I don't play, have never played, or intend to play dungeons and dragons. I am a sucker for Monopoly though. ;) This goes well in reference to me calling myself "bi". Other people have different defintions of what bisexuality is, but to me, bisexuality means what I am; nothing more, nothing less. A label is what you label it."
I don't see what the big deal is about labels anyway. Any kind of label no matter where you look, is never 100% true to its meaning because it has different meanings to each individual person. I say we celebrate the diversity, and don't try to fit everyone into nice, neat little categories to segregate. -

Wed, June 22, 2005 - 12:32 PM"and don't try to fit everyone into nice, neat little categories"
btw, that's never going to happen anyways because each individual is diverse in some way.

Re: Are there any girls who don't like RPG's?
Thu, December 21, 2006 - 1:57 PMOk, first of all D&D is a damn good game, if you're not into that, there are probably hundreds of other tabletop games you could get yourself into. My favorite is Mage: the Ascension. LARP (live-action role playing) is another fun thing to get into (Vampire: the Masquerade baby!).
I guess what I'm trying to say is, RPGs are ftw. No matter if it is on a console, or in RL.
If you don't like one type, try another. I personally love RPG console games. I recently found a new love - Shin Megami Tensei's Nocturne for ps2. They are not as complicated as they first seem. I have never had to pick up a manual for any console RPG at all. Tabletop and LARP on the other hand...you do need a little bit of studying up for most.

Re: Are there any girls who don't like RPG's?
Wed, June 22, 2005 - 12:26 PMUT2004 in a LAN is definitly not something I'd call boring, but to each his/her own.
I actually don't like sports games that much either. I'll play it if it's the only thing around, but I'd much rather prefer a good RTS or FPS.
Some RTS games I'd highly recommend are RoN, Homeworld (oldie but goodie), CCG, Rome:TW (what RTS gamer wouldn't love this game!), and my newly recently found joy, LOTR:BFME.

Re: Are there any girls who don't like RPG's?
Wed, June 22, 2005 - 12:37 PMShannon, I do agree with you on all points where Video Game RPGs are concerned however. I'm getting tired of Jade Empire. I'm gonna trade it in. I didn't finnish the last three RPGs I've had for X-Box before I traded them in. I'm only buying games that are 2 to 4 players anymore. I rarely play Video Games alone anymore. -
-
Re: Are there any girls who don't like RPG's?
Wed, June 22, 2005 - 12:41 PMYeah, playing video games alone after tasting online battles or LAN parties can make the game seem kinda dull. I wish all games were online, but sadly, that's not the case. Maybe with the new consoles coming out, it'll become a standard. -
-
Re: Are there any girls who don't like RPG's?
Wed, June 22, 2005 - 12:48 PMIt seems to be geting there, yeah. I have two games that have expansions that can only be played online.

Re: Are there any girls who don't like RPG's?
Wed, June 22, 2005 - 4:13 PMI feel the same way you do, like I should like these games but I have yet to really get into any of them. The time factor scares me a bit because I know you can't really get into it until you've put in an amount of time. You know it's probably going to be worth it but you worry that once you start then you'll have to be exclusive with that game. Especially the MMORPGs which interest me most and I admit I have to try soon. Just the fact that the other people in the game are actually real makes it far more appealing to me. I'm afraid XehmoZaidahz, that I'm not a gamer in your purist sense either. I like playing all kinds of games in life but started these kinds of games in arcades rather than in DD circles. I'm low in the anorak factor which means I have limited capacity for all the detail of some of these games though I know mastering all that IS the joy of it for some.
Oh and I don't do sports games either. RTS games, it's the time thing again, I'm not sure I'm ready to marry a game yet. The repetition of these can get me down too. -

Re: Are there any girls who don't like RPG's?
Wed, June 22, 2005 - 4:55 PMi have to say, i'm a gamer girl who scorns the idea of a video game as an rpg. it may be that *style* of a game, but rpg's are good ol' fashion geek-fests at a table with cheetos, mountain dew, and five other friends for 72 straight hours. then it's back to work for the dice-rollers!
don't get me wrong, i love those self-same rpg styled video games. but they aren't rpg's ;) -

Re: Are there any girls who don't like RPG's?
Wed, June 22, 2005 - 4:57 PMMostly I agree with you... that is unless one roleplays the characters like I dorkily do! -

Re: Are there any girls who don't like RPG's?
Wed, June 22, 2005 - 9:20 PM"Mostly I agree with you... that is unless one roleplays the characters like I dorkily do!"
but you really can't Roleplay. Its choose-your-own-adventure at best. The most sophisticated RPGs are still stuck on a track. The choices that you have are limited, and the story always ends a limited number of ways. The Great thing about RPGs that Video games just can't give you is group activity that generates original narative. EVERY TIME.
I'm just sayin' is all.

Re: Are there any girls who don't like RPG's?
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 1:46 AMYou know, Angel, some RTS games are actually quite quick! As I discovered, LOTR:BFME is really short. It made me sad when I won it in a few days (it probably took others less than that). And the best RTS game I've played so far, Rome:TW, has a quick campaign mode or a long compaign mode. The games are out there, you just have to know where to look.
I'm sure there's RPG's out that allow the same thing; either a short or long game. The appeal however, for these types of games (RPG an RTS) is mostly long term. I chose the long game in Rome because I wanted a long and full enjoyment of the game. This is probably what you're speaking of. It can be time consuming, but it can be played over long spans rather than giant chunks of time in short days. -
-
Re: Are there any girls who don't like RPG's?
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 4:18 PMYou're right Shannon, I'm probably dismissing the RTS genre too quickly. I have a mission to try out SWG but after that I might get Rome:TW on your recommendation and see how I like it. I think if I could try some in short mode first then I might actually start to get the secret wonderful thing that makes people love them.
I quite like the idea of playing it over a long time span but in smaller chunks. The only problem with that strategy is often I've forgotten what is going on by the time I get back to it! I much prefer to play games pretty heavily until they're done. And one at a time. Like serial monogamy.

Re: Are there any girls who don't like RPG's?
Wed, April 5, 2006 - 10:06 AMI'm thinking about buying LOTR:BFME, would you recommend this game? My fav RTS was the old Bungie Series Myth I and II. I'm a big RTS fan and would much rather play RTS games than RPG. I think it has something to do with solving a problem, RTS game problems are not as scripted or puzzle type problems, and it's usually up to your own ingenuity how to solve. I guess I also like lots of men to control (kinda like dating... lol). My current game is Strength and Honour. RomeTW was a great game too. Though I've played Age of Kings, Warcraft and StarCraft, Stronghold, HomeWorld, Ground Control.
other non RTS games I've played... Diablo, Neverwinter Nights, Need for Speed Underground and Most Wanted, The Sims I and II... and a few others -

Re: Are there any girls who don't like RPG's?
Wed, April 5, 2006 - 7:56 PMThere are a few online games on the horizon that look like they will offer a mix of RPG and FPS style play. After playing single player RPG's, then playing against people online in FPS games and RPG games with player vs. player combat, I know how you feel about RPG's feeling dull.
Check out the sites for "Age of Conan" and "The Chronicles of Spellborn." They look promising.

Re: Are there any girls who don't like RPG's?
Thu, April 6, 2006 - 8:00 AMI would definitely recommend BFME if you are even a little fan of the movie(s). There is nothing ground breaking about it, but it has all the elements and has done them well. BFME II is sort of a dissapointment for me. The only thing that makes it worth getting is the, Create A Hero, and the War of The Ring mode, which was actually made from an entirely seperate team than the creators of the story mode. It seems one team got it right, and the other failed horribly (story mode). There are a few more maps to play in skirmish mode, but that is to be expected of a sequel.
So story mode in one is better, but two has better replayability. It's up to you which you'd prefer more. -

Mon, May 8, 2006 - 11:06 AMAge of Conan is looking better and better, especially for people who don't normally like RPGs. More than likely I'm playing this one, it looks exciting. They're definitely keeping the feeling of the world of Conan.

Re: Are there any girls who don't like RPG's?
Mon, May 15, 2006 - 4:45 PMI LIVE for RPG's- almost any genre. It helps me get into the game. funny I actually thought RPG's were more appealing to girls, next to the virtual pet type caregiver games. -

Re: Are there any girls who don't like RPG's?
Sun, May 21, 2006 - 4:31 AMI think it's like anything else when something appeals to a majority of a group, not all of them are going to like it, just a lot of them. Every female gamer I hang out with or have met off the computer and most on the computer love them. But everyone has and should have thier own cups of tea. I also live for them. Right now I'm so deep in Oblivion that I think my husband forgets I'm here. LOL Quiet, absorbed, and hidden away in a corner to play in peace.

Re: Are there any girls who don't like RPG's?
Thu, February 22, 2007 - 3:51 PMI DETEST turn-based RPGs!!
Maybe you just haven't played the "right" RPG? There are many non-turn-based, cross genre RPGs that have a very nice, story oriented flow with plenty of action. Like The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind AND Oblivion; Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic; Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, and many others. Linear games often have less replay value, imho, unless they incorporate co-op play. Then again, I'm a FPS whore and many of those aren't known for their stellar story lines...but damn is it fun to blow up stuff! ;)
